Flashback: An Apartment Makeover by Steven Gambrel

New York Apartment by Steven Gambrel

The fab faux fireplace in last week's Taylor Howes post reminded me of this makeover from Domino's archive. Designer extraordinaire Steven Gambrel completely transformed a tiny New York apartment with paint, smart furniture choices, and architectural elements, like the cast-stone, faux fireplace. The space is still a source of inspiration with lots of clever design solutions (e.g., grosgrain-trimmed bookshelves, painted-on molding, etc.) and a sophisticated, very-unrental-like color palette.

Raji Radhakrishnan's Virginia Home

I must give a Sukio shout-out to local designer Raji Radhakrishnan. Her Northern Virginia home, recently featured on the cover of Luxe Magazine, is filled to the brim with assorted pieces of various eras and origins. Contemporary meets mid-century modern meets art deco... It all comes together in this beautifully eclectic space. Favorite features include Raji's awesome art collection, high-gloss office, and killer door moldings. Très original!

Sukio's #ModernGlamour Instagram Challenge

Several weeks back, I realized that Instagram is quickly becoming the new Tumblr–i.e., feeds filled with inspiration from here and there, not necessarily a smartphone's camera lens. And so, I began to experiment. I knew I had to slowly get into the swing of things. I rarely (read "never") opened the app, let alone posted to it, so reviewing my feed on a semi-regular basis seemed like a good start.

Baby Step 1: Open the app. Check!

To my amazement, the visual candy was plentiful. I started liking photos and sharing them via Tumblr:

Instagram pic by @naseebsDo I know @naseebs personally? No, but I'm gonna like her Swiss vacation pic anyway.

Instagram pic by @maisonvalentinoWoman walks across street in @maisonvalentino. Liking it!

Instagram pic by @modaoperandi@modaoperandi posts pic of incredibly cute shoes. I'm gonna like that too!

Introducing Sukio's #ModernGlamour Instagram Challenge

Now that I've mastered the "double-tap," I'm ready to become a full-fledged Instagrammer. For the next 30+ days, I'm posting glamorously delicious photos to my Instragram feed. That's right! I'm transforming my stream from a sad amalgamation of.... other into a highly-curated collection of inspiring imagery. My tag of choice: #modernglamour. After all, it's what I love, and no one seems to be really using it anyway.

Wish me luck!

Guerlain Boutique by Peter Marino Architect

Step inside Maison Guerlain–an expansive, and historic, perfumery on the Champs-Elysées. Renovated by Peter Marino to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the boutique has all the glitz and glamour of a high-end (specifically, LVMH) brand. Marble, mirror, brass, and crystal adorn hallways and stairwells, beauty counters and display cases. I could easily get lost in the luxury!

Jenna Lyons, Self Service Magazine

For what I think are obvious reasons, I have a major crush on J. Crew's Jenna Lyons. She seems to be the counterpoint to everything, from definitions of beauty and personal style, to working motherhood and corporate leadership. Jenna is indeed her own woman, and what better example of her unique approach to life than her beautiful mess of an office.

I love that while others pretend to thrive in perfectly pristine spaces, Jenna boldly proclaims the opposite. With piles of swatches, papers, and personal effects, her office reflects a creative mind at work while still managing to look pretty darn stylish. I can't get enough!

Kelly Wearstler Talks Design While Mixing Drinks

Kelly Wearstler for Eye Swoon

During my recent foray into Instagram, I stumbled upon Eye Swoon's Q&A with Sukio-favorite Kelly Wearstler. Amongst drink recipes and pics of her signature bar accessories, the style maven dishes on everything from daily habits to her design philosophy. For Ms. Wearstler, it seems elements of good design should come together like a tasty cocktail:

"There has to be a balance of elements in the spaces I design. Striking the right alchemy is where the magic happens... The juxtaposition of new and old, masculine and feminine, raw and refined - the tension of opposites I find to be very sexy. It adds a certain drama and vibrancy to a space."

When decorating her Tribeca digs, Industry Standard's Nicole Najafi found inspiration in the work of two of my favorite designers. Can you guess who?

If you guessed Ryan Korban and Miles Redd, you would be correct! In describing her space, Nicole comments, "I have fur everywhere, that’s my Ryan Korban side and the unexpected injections of color are all Miles Redd." It's a great example of referencing without duplicating.

Gabi Hearst's New York townhouse reflects what matters to her most – family. With the help of architect Daniel Romualdez, she renovated the 19th-century structure with her and her husband's four children in mind. "Thinking about how we would all interact was a main focal point." But with three full closets housing an envy-inducing wardrobe (Valentino, anyone?), she undoubtedly saved a little space just for Gabi.

30-Day Instagram Challenge: Your Favorite Pics and Lessons Learned

#ModernGlamour Instagram Challenge #ModernGlamour Instagram Challenge

Thirty days of uploading, tagging, and posting have taught me a few key lessons. The first (and perhaps most obvious) is daily 'gramming takes A LOT of discipline, at least, more than I expected. Unlike other platforms, there is no "set-it-and-forget-it" option on Instagram. My little fingers did the walking with each post in real time. And, although this could be inconvenient on occasion, I definitely felt more engaged and, here it goes,...more social.

@hellosukio: Desk couture by you know who #modernglamour #interiors

The second lesson: Curated feeds are the key to enjoying any social media platform. Follow too many folks and it becomes an overwhelmingly endless stream of visual noise. With Instagram, I plan to keep my numbers small so I can actually see what people are trying to share, and if I don't like it, I'm unfollowing. Harsh, I know.

@hellosukio: More Kelly just cuz #modernglamour #interiors

Final lesson: Stats ruin the magic. If you solely focus on audience engagement, content optimization, and all the other buzzy terms, it becomes less about expression and more about competition. I'm tired of numbers. I'm tired of rankings and social proof. And so, I've declared Instagram my "No Stat Zone." I'm just gonna post and see what happens.

With it's billowing gowns and bright palette, D&G's Fall Alta Moda collection is a feast for the eyes. The show itself was staged on the sunny shoreline of Capri with moments captured on mobile devices and beamed around the world via Instagram. Such glimpses only fed my curiosity to see more, a craving finally satisfied thanks to this editorial by Vogue Japan.

To create his new home in a Chelsea high-rise, art advisor Allan Schwartzman broke all the rules. A three-bedroom layout was transformed into one, walls giving way to light and panoramic views, while art and furnishings fill its minimalist interior architecture to the brim. "Starting fresh" also gains new meaning here. When decorating the apartment, Allan used furniture idling in storage. The resulting space is a light-filled gallery of sorts, with spaces to work, live, and entertain.

Ciao, Oscar! Oscar de la Renta Spring 2015 RTW

He was an elegant man who made elegant clothes–America's purveyor of lady. Needless to say. I'm saddened by the passing of the one-and-only Oscar de la Renta. I've heard some comment that "he had a full life," noting that his age of 82 seems like an appropriate departure point. Conversely, I can't help but feel that he had more to give. Take last month's debut of his spring collection: it's the epitome of feminine sophistication, signature Oscar. His life was full and he contributed much, but I'll continue to miss what could have been.
